Social Dynamics in Indian Society

C. R. Harilakshmeendra Kumar, SGTDS

Abstract: The social dynamics in Indian society is inherently less turbulent and comparatively more non – violent in nature.  In other words, there is ample scope for the search for a non – violent social order.  This inclination to non – violent behaviour has a rich cultural heritage going back to hundreds of years. The existence a highly pluralistic society in a remarkably stable condition, the evolution of a modern democratic system, the confluence of a variety of religious cultures, the presence of an unbroken chain of spiritual giants, the intellectual support extended by the country’s many philosophies, and above all, Gandhis’s bold experiments in non – violent action, all these make this society a fitting stage to articulate , experiment and develop further mankind’s urge towards a higher, nobler level of existence.  This paper is an attempt to articulate this vision of a non – violent social order. It is in three parts: Part I bring out the nature and significance of the study of social dynamics. Part II tries to show how the inner consciousness of Indian society is uniquely inclined towards the establishment of a just, peaceful and spiritual order in society. And part III examines Gandhi’s contribution, in theory and practice, to this search for a new social order. The assumption is that a scientific study of the Indian society has the potential to reveal the forces of social dynamics that accelerate the evolution of human society on constructive lines. This hope is strengthened by the success of the Gandhian experiments in non – violent action.
